Fred Hertha, In Memoriam, 1927-2017

Jun 16th, 2017 | By | Category: SCA News

An exceptional and dedicated member of the SCA Community Association has passed away.  Fred Hertha was on our volunteer board for 15 years, from 1994 until 2009.  After his first year as a general director-at-large, he jumped right in the next year and served as Vice-President 1995-1996, then President for the next four years 1996-2000, and ultimately during the years 2000-2009 Fred was our Treasurer, a role in which he excelled.

The members of the community who worked with Fred remember him as keenly intelligent, funny, insightful and passionate about our community.  Above all, Fred was a true gentleman:  refined, well-read, and always charming and kind to others.

Fred was born in Germany and he was only two years old when his family immigrated to Canada in 1929.  He grew up in Toronto and received his Civil Engineering degree from the U of T in 1949 and his Masters in Civil Engineering from MIT in 1952.  Fred moved to Calgary in 1983 and later became active not only in our SCA community association, but also in his local condominium complex, 99 Christie Point.  There he also served on the Board as President, Vice-President, Past-President and member at large – and he continued to steer the long-term financial planning for the condo right up until this year.  The current President of 99 Christie Point, Fred Prior, says “Fred Hertha was a significant contributor to the Condo Board;  he will be sadly missed by his many friends and neighbours in our complex.”

In addition to participating in community politics, Fred was also active with higher levels of government representatives, never shy to share his experience, opinions and insights.  In recognition of his contributions, Fred was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005, and the Minister’s Seniors Service Award in 2006.  Former mayor Dave Bronconnier spoke at Fred’s memorial service, and current MP Ron Liepert delivered a letter of condolence, as they each knew Fred personally.

Fred passed away peacefully at the age of 89, on May 14, 2017.  His beloved wife Jean predeceased him in 2012.  Fred is survived by two sons and three grandchildren.

Thank you, Fred, for your significant involvement in our community and the community association.  You will be missed.
