Mar 7th, 2018 | By | Category: City News, Post to Facebook

Are you living with dementia?  Do you know anyone living with dementia?  Would you like to make a positive difference in your community?

The Dementia Friendly Communities Proof of Concept Project in the Calgary Westhills region aims to:

  • Build community capacity to support individuals to age-in-place and remain in the community for as long as possible;
  • Raise awareness of dementia with the aim to reduce stigma associated with dementia.

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities within the Dementia Friendly Community project which include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assisted shopping – escorting individuals on shopping excursions and providing a social contact
  • Escorted transportation – escorting individuals to medical appointments
  • Friendly visiting – provide social contact, companionship and support
  • Becoming a Dementia Awareness trainer – training businesses/organizations and the general public in how to be dementia friendly
  • Facilitating at a Memory café
  • Facilitating at a Dementia Friendly Communities booth
  • Being a dementia friend in your community
  • Distribution of Dementia Friendly Communities posters and leaflets in your community!
  • Spreading the word about being part of a Dementia Friendly Community!

Free dementia awareness training is available to all volunteers at the Signal Hill library on Wednesday April 25th, 6:30 – 8pm. To register visit: or call: 403 260 2620 (Signal Hill Library).

This training will help you understand dementia, outline many of the myths around dementia, provide advice on how to interact with someone who may have dementia and tips on risk reduction.  In addition, the training will cover the available resources in your Calgary Westhills Dementia Friendly Community.

So please join us for an evening that will make all the difference to anyone impacted by dementia by helping them to stay at home for longer and live well with dementia in the community!

In the meantime, if you have any queries, please contact:
