Westhills Dementia Friendly Community Update

Jun 12th, 2018 | By | Category: City News

Memory Cafes or Conversation Cafes We are extremely grateful to our volunteer Memory Café Facilitators who have generously given their time to running the Strathcona Good Earth Memory café for the past few months on a weekly basis.  As participation has been low, we have decided to continue community outreach in a different way through hosting a Dementia Friendly Communities (DFC) Business Coffee Cluster event which will take place at the venue of one of our partner organizations – ATB at Signal Hill in August.  It will be an opportunity for businesses to find out more about what a Dementia Friendly Community means to them and an opportunity to receive dementia awareness training and potentially sign up their staff to receive training.  Please note that the Memory Cafe, now renamed “Conversation Cafe”, hosted by the First Lutheran Church will continue to be run by our dedicated volunteers on the first and third Wednesday of each month.  Everyone is welcome including people impacted by dementia.

Rundle College intergenerational program continues to be a success with the students putting on a Seniors’ Tea at Rundle College! Wentworth Manor residents enjoyed a fun afternoon with conversation and music provided by the students.

At Wentworth Manor an Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) Art Show and Silent Auction event was held to showcase the art work which the residents have been doing with students from Rundle College.

ATB Bank, West Springs Branch – Congratulations on becoming a Dementia Friendly Business! An integrated DFC checklist was recently carried out with ATB and all areas were deemed to be dementia friendly!
