Electronics Recycling

ovens, cell phones, blow dryers, speakers, cables, phones, DVD players, record players, cash registers, and other small electronics.

SCA Clothing and Household Items Drive

Title: SCA Clothing and Household Items Drive
Location: SCA Community Centre
Description: The SCA is sponsoring a clothing & household items drive on Saturday,
October 16 to support WINS, the Women in Need Society. Between 10am and 2pm, please bring your gently used items to the SCA community centre
parking lot, where a WINS truck will gratefully accept your donations.
The mission at WINS is to help women
and their families help themselves. In Calgary, WINS operates four thrift stores in Bowness, Dover, Fisher Park, and Killarney. The revenue generated from these stores helps WINS fund their community programs.
On Saturday, October 16, in the SCA parking lot, from 10am–2pm, WINS can accept:
Clothing, Footwear, & Accessories:
• All women’s, men’s, children’s & baby’s
clothing—in season, clean and in good condition
• Shoes, boots & sandals, belts, purses/bags, gloves and jewelry
Items for Children:
• Baby strollers, cribs, and high chairs with the manufacturer date and safety sticker
• Toys—clean & gently used or new
• Car seats—will be checked for expiry date, accidents or recalls; if not suitable,
they will be recycled appropriately
Household Items (clean, in working order):
• Bedding, towels, curtains & rods
• Dishes, pots, pans, & cooking utensils
• Small Appliances—coffee pots, toasters,
microwaves
• Lamps, fans, humidifiers, wall clocks, vanity mirrors
• Bathroom items—shower curtains, soap holder, garbage basket, towel holder
• Knick knacks, decorations, & pictures
• In season decorations (Easter, Hallo-ween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc)
The SCA and WINS thank you in advance

SCA Stampede Breakfast Pictures

We were lucky to have a nice sunny Saturday morning on June 19 for the SCA’s annual pre-Stampede breakfast.

About 900 people enjoyed the usual pancakes and sausages, which were cooked and served by a dozen volunteers. Kids loved the face painting, clown, super-slide and farm animals. Kids and grown-ups alike could tour the fire truck and ambulance in our parking lot…until the fire truck had to race away on a call.

As something new this year, we invited our renters to set up booths promoting their activities available here at our community centre, and we hope that if you attended the breakfast you may have seen an activity that caught your attention either for yourselves or your kids (see full list on page 4).

Entertainment from the Chinook Country Line Dancers included teaching the crowd a dance called “The Hitch-hiker,” and it was nice to see so many people moving to the music with big smiles on their faces.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped set up & clean up, flip pancakes, cook sausages, distribute juice boxes, empty garbages, and supervise the kids’ slide. Thank you to Sobeys for giving us a discount on our supplies and for mixing the large buckets of pancake batter. And a HUGE thank you to Terry at Strathos Bar & Grill, who donated and pre-cooked all the sausages the day before our event!!

This annual event is always hosted in June, before school gets out for the summer. See you next year!

SCA Movie Night – November 5

It was great the first time, let’s do it again! Last April, about 100 SCA members enjoyed a FREE spaghetti dinner at the community centre. Everyone agreed it was yummy—great spaghetti, caesar salad, garlic bread and dessert.

We’re hosting another spaghetti dinner night on Friday November 5, so please join us! Dinner will be served from 6-7pm. If you’ve already got your SCA membership, please bring your card—otherwise,

we’ll be selling SCA memberships at the door. What a great value: $5 for your whole family for the whole year, and no one has to cook dinner on this night!

After dinner we’ll be hosting a FREE family movie night, title TBA (watch the “marquee” sign in the SCA parking lot). We’ll provide the popcorn and drinks—you bring your favourite comfy blankets or pillows to lay on the floor (yes, we’ll have chairs for anyone

who wants to sit at the back). The movie will start at 7:30pm.

Major Monies and Grants Available to Aspen Woods

The developer of Aspen Woods has set aside an area at the corner of Aspen Stone Road and Aspen Stone Boulevard for recreational facilities. And the developer has a capital fund that, when combined with matching grants, allows for the spending of approximately $400,000 for recreational facilities on this site.

The SCA Community Association is responsible for mobilizing these funds and we request the input of residents of Aspen Woods to determine what type of facility to build.

We invite you to be part of the planning process. This is a great chance to get involved in your community and make decisions that will have a tangible outcome. Don’t expect someone else to do this, we need YOU to get involved and make a positive difference for your family and neighbours.
