Recreational Programs for Minors

Program coordinators or administrators can email Michael.Smith@SCACalgary.ca if they would like to have their programs listed.

The programs listed below are, to the best of our knowledge, the closest to Strathcona, Christie & Aspen.  Different sports have different boundaries, so please check the websites of the recreation program you are interested in.

Basketball

Calgary West (CalWest) Basketball Association

Calgary West Basketball is a non-profit volunteer organization.  Our primary goal is accommodate accomodate every player who wishes to play but the number of players accepted each year may be limited by the number of gym times available to us and by the number of volunteer coaches and administrators available.  In seasons where registration exceeds the number of teams available, priority is given to families who have volunteered for Calgary West Basketball in the past or currently, priority is then on a first come first serve basis.  We do not give priority to players based on ability.

Hockey

Trails West Hockey Association

Trails West is a non-profit organization, which means that all the money we collect in fees goes back into the organization. There are currently no paid positions in Trails West other than the professional accountants etc. who we are required to use to fulfill our responsibility to our members, and to the provincial government which sanctions us. Our biggest cost is renting ice.  We have discussed from time to time the benefits of retaining a paid part-time person to help with coaching development.

Lacrosse

Calgary Sabrecats Lacrosse Club

Formed in the early 1980’s, the Calgary Sabrecats Lacrosse Club is the second largest minor lacrosse organization in the City of Calgary with an enrollment of approximately 625 boys and girls in 2007.

Our Club has representative teams from all playing division administered by the Calgary District Lacrosse Association (“CDLA”), including Mini-Tyke, Tyke, Novice, Pee Wee, Bantam & Midget. We also have about 120 players registered in the emerging “Junior” Division administered by the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (“RMLL”). All registrants compete in a box lacrosse season that extends typically from mid-April to the end of June.

Our Club’s philosophy remains unchanged since its formation: We are committed to providing box lacrosse opportunities for all ages and genders in a fair, safe and respectful environment. The Club’s objectives are to teach, to have fun, to develop excellence through coaching for character and skill development and to provide enriched experiences like development clinics, participation in tournaments and travel team programs.
