SCA CA Recycle Day (Community Cleanup)

 

Date:                     Saturday, May 23, 2026

Time:                     9:00 am to 1:00 pm (Last car must be in line up at 12:45pm)

Location:           277 Strathcona Drive SW

 

We are partnering with the City of Calgary to host a Community Clean Up helping residents dispose of items that don’t fit in the black cart supporting a cleaner, safer city.

 

All Calgarians are welcome at any community cleanup, regardless of where they live. If you can’t make the event in your own neighborhood, you can drop off items at another cleanup locations.

 

See below for recycler information and what they accept.

 

Free for everyone but there is a fee for paper shredding for non-SCA CA members.

 

Items will be limited to one vehicle load per family. No trailers or U-Hauls will be permitted. NO COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION WASTE WILL BE ACCEPTED

 

If your items cannot be accepted, you must take them back with you. No blue cart recycling (including carboard) will be on site.

 

This year we are incorporating a Spring Drive to Support the Calgary Food Bank. Along with canned goods they need personal hygiene items, baby supplies, pet food and birthday party items. See full wish list Donate Food, Our Wish List | Calgary Food Bank

The following recyclers will be at our event. More details on what they accept are below:

 

·      Electronics Recycling by Techno Trash – TVs, computers, printers/copy machines 

·      Paper Shredding by EnviroShred: Free for SCA CA Members; $20 fee for non-members.

·      Garbage trucks from City of Calgary *Limit one vehicle load per family* Please stay behind the designated coned area.

·      Scrap Metal Disposal by Recon Metal (they are also accepting car batteries)

WHAT WE ACCEPT

CITY OF CALGARY GARBAGE TRUCKS ACCEPT:

·      Furniture (desks, chairs, sofas)

·      Toilets

·      Recalled or broken recreational products

·      Lumber from old fences and decks

·      Old mattresses must be covered in plastic for any volunteer assistance

 

WHAT THEY DON’T ACCEPT: (See below for more recyclers)

·      Barbecues, lawnmowers

·      Large appliances

·      Glass (window panes, glass table tops, etc.)

·      Household appliances with freon (refrigerator, freezers, AC units or water coolers)

·      Microwaves

·      Liquids (cooking oil)

·      Household hazardous waste (propane tanks, fire extinguishers, paint)

·      Chemicals that include automobile/cleaning/healthcare/gardening chemicals

·      Railway ties

·      Sod or dirt

·      Car seats

·      Tires

·      Lithium batteries

ACCEPTED ELECTRONICS (Techno Trash): 

·      TV’s (LCD, CRT or Plasma) 

·      Computer Accessories (Monitors, mice, keyboards & speakers) 

·      Computer parts (Cables, Cords, fans, power supplies, Hard drives for destruction, cpu, ram chips and boards) 

·      Laptops, notebooks, tablets and E-readers 

·      Printers, Fax Machines, Copiers and Scanners; Wires and cables 

·      Home entertainment (VCR/DVD players, stereo equipment, cable boxes, 

·      Videogame consoles/accessories)

·      Networking/Telecommunications Equipment (hubs, switches, routers and phones)

·      Cell phones and accessories.

 

NOT ACCEPTED:

·      Household batteries

·      Large appliances; Anything with Freon (AC units or water coolers)

·      Thermostats

·      Smoke detectors

·      Wooden speakers

·      VHS tapes, DVDs or CDs

·      Small household appliances (Microwaves, coffee pots, crock pots, toaster ovens, blenders or toasters)

·      Household electronics (curling irons, blow dryers, lamps/ light fixtures, or vacuum cleaners

 

ACCEPTED METAL (Recon Metal)

Examples include: 

·      Recon WILL accept car batteries

·      BBQs

·      Metal shelves

·      Metal fencing

·      If you bring an old gas lawn mower it MUST be empty of gas first or it will not be accepted.  Sorry, no brass items.

 

NOT ACCEPTED:

·      Combustible or explosive materials 

·      Liquids

·      Closed containers or cylinders of any kind (compressed gas, propane etc.)

·      Dirt, debris, or waste of any kind (tires, glass, wood, dirt, concrete, asphalt or other non-metallic materials)

·      Material containing asbestos 

·      Items containing mercury

·      Radioactive material

·      Barbed wire

·      Break pots/chambers with loaded springs

·      Mattresses – These must go into the City Dump Trucks.  Volunteers are not able to assist unless wrapped in plastic
